Kenya's terrorist attacks

It is definitely sad to say but in truth the terrorist acts spawned in Kenya, while in the past would have been surprising, are now to me very much part of day to day life. Terrorist actions claim the lives of many around the world and although I believe the scale of attacks that take place are getting smaller, the actions are almost becoming more and more personal as the acts of violence around the world are perpetuated by smaller groups if not single people. I'm not sure which is more alarming, a group with a leader to keep them in line, or people operating of their own accord. Kenya has seen many acts of violence taken place against its own people, from single and massive bombings, to gunman, grenades, and gas. Some events kill and wound 100s, while others have only injured or just resulted in the death of the terrorist taking action against innocent civilians. It would be and I guess will be, interesting during my life to see the events of terrorism and random acts of violence either increase, decrease, or stay the same. The question anymore is when or if it will ever stop.

  1. It is interesting to see the shift of individuals acting on their own accord with no leadership carrying out attacks such as these. I believe that the attacks will likely increase in our lifetime as more and more tension around the world begins to occur and the world becomes more intertwined. People will have to learn to live amongst people they are not accustomed to and this could prove difficult for some.

  2. I agree that these attacks are now occurring to often. I don't really think there is a perfect way to stop them because if people are passionate about doing something they will do anything they can to accomplish their goal. In this case, the terrorists are passionate about killing and instilling fear into innocent human beings eyes. I agree that it will be interesting see how the rate at which these occurrences happen changes in the future. Good post.

  3. You raise a very good research question: are these attacks actually increasing? It certainly does seem like they are, but we also have to remember that our focus in the US is relatively narrow. We tend to look primarily at groups that threaten us or our allies. Some have argued that the broad sweep of history, even over the past few recent decades, is toward much more peace. If there are more attacks like these even as violence is decreasing in total, what would that mean?

  4. It is a really sad realization when you come to terms with the fact terrorist attacks have become so common, that an attack like doesn't seem to phase us to much. I agree with your assessment that terror attacks seem to be on the rise, yet the scare thing is no body knows how to stop them from happening. That is why, even though the U.S. has a massive spending problem and there needs to be cuts made, I believe it would be a mistake to decrease military spending because it seems like the threat of terrorism is not going to stop, and we are the number one target.
